From South Node release to North Node growth — eclipses are cosmic realignments.
Eclipses have always held a sense of mystery. Ancient people saw them as omens, but in astrology, eclipses are powerful points of realignment. They are moments when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align so precisely that shadow itself becomes a teacher. Far from being rare events, eclipses happen multiple times every year, yet each one feels profound because of where it occurs on the nodal axis—the North Node and the South Node of the Moon.
The Nodes : North and South
The lunar nodes are not planets, but points created by the Moon’s orbit crossing the path of the Sun. They are always opposite one another, forming an axis that speaks of destiny, growth, and release.
- The North Node is often described as “up.” It is where we are heading, the direction of growth, the qualities we are learning to embrace. It feels new, sometimes uncomfortable, but always evolutionary.
- The South Node is “where we come from.” It represents the patterns, habits, and comfort zones of the past. The South Node isn’t inherently negative, but if we cling to it, we stay stuck. It is the reservoir of what we must release or transform to continue evolving.
In this way, eclipses activate the tension between these two poles: where we’ve been versus where we’re going.
Why Eclipses Are Not So Uncommon
While eclipses carry a reputation for drama, they actually occur two seasons per year, typically bringing a pair (one solar, one lunar). What makes them significant is not their rarity but their precision and symbolism. Each eclipse belongs to a series along a zodiacal axis, lasting about 18 months.
During this time, the nodes move counter-clockwise through the zodiac. This means that before the Virgo–Pisces eclipses, we lived through eclipses along the Aries–Libra axis. And before that, Taurus–Scorpio. Each shift changes the collective themes we work with:
- Aries–Libra (past): questions of self versus other, independence versus partnership.
- Virgo–Pisces (current): clarity versus illusion, reality versus fantasy, discernment versus surrender.
So while eclipses happen regularly, the themes they illuminate evolve, pushing both individuals and society toward fresh lessons.

The Counter-Clockwise Journey
It may feel strange that the nodes move backwards—what astrologers call “retrograde motion.” But this motion is symbolic. The counter-clockwise rhythm shows us that evolution isn’t always a straight line. Instead, it is a spiral: we circle back, revisit, reframe, and then move forward with greater wisdom.
By honoring the North Node’s invitation, we step into growth. By releasing the excess of the South Node, we find liberation. For example, in the Virgo–Pisces cycle, the collective work is:
- South Node in Pisces: letting go of confusion, victimhood, or escaping through fantasy.
- North Node in Virgo: moving toward clarity, integration, and practical ways of bringing dreams into form.
This is not about abandoning spirituality (Pisces) or clinging to perfection (Virgo). It’s about weaving the best of both into a balanced, meaningful life.
Why Eclipses Matter for You
Every eclipse acts like a spotlight. It lands on a house in your chart, stirring themes related to that area of life—career, relationships, creativity, or health. You may notice changes, endings, or new beginnings around eclipses, but the deeper meaning is always alignment. They remind us that we are not static beings; we are in motion, growing into our North Node potential.
So when an eclipse season arrives, ask yourself:
- What am I ready to release from my past story?
- Where am I being called to grow, even if it feels unfamiliar?
- How can I use clarity, presence, and truth to guide me forward?
These questions transform eclipses from something to fear into something to embrace with curiosity and courage.
A Positive Perspective
Astrology reminds us that eclipses are not punishments, but invitations. The dance of the nodes ensures that life keeps moving, evolving, and unfolding in new directions. By aligning with this rhythm, we discover freedom from old cycles and the empowerment to step boldly into new ones.
Eclipses may be common in occurrence, but they are always unique in meaning, holding a mirror to the exact lessons we need at this stage of our journey.
